LEONARD COHEN DIES

BONUS PLAYLIST OF THE WEEK

2016 has been a bumper year for deaths of top celebrities. The latest to be announced is the death of Leonard Cohen at the age of 82 years old. Although his songs and words are brilliant, they tend to be a little depressing.

My particular favourites are Bird on A Wire , Suzanne and Hallelujah.

We went to Edinburgh Festival in 2002 and saw the  show “Arthur Smith Sings Leonard Cohen” which was Arthur Smith the comedian doing a complete show about Leonard Cohen. The show was brilliant and he went on to tour the UK with it and over the last few years and earlier this year has been performing “Arthur Smith Sings Leonard Cohen Vol 2”

Below are listed 20 favourites of the many Leonard Cohen Songs:

1              Suzanne (1967)

WEEKLY PLAYLIST

I am a big fan of the NOW That’s What I Call Music compilation albums and always have been. But I am not too sure about the title of their latest album. “Now That's What I Call 20th Century” To me the music covered is the last 20 years of the 20th Century. I suppose if I put the compilation together it would be the 2nd half of the 20th Century. I have not read their sleeve notes but I suspect it is a selection of music from when NOW started producing the series from 1st release of NOW Vol 1 on  28 November 1983 until 31st December 1999. I just find it a slightly misleading title, but still full of good music and lots of timeless classics

WEEKLY PLAYLIST

SPECIAL

Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme is the third studio album by American music duo Simon & Garfunkel. Produced by Bob Johnston, the album was released on October 10, 1966 in the United States by Columbia Records. Following the success of their debut single "The Sound of Silence", Simon & Garfunkel regrouped after a time apart while Columbia issued their second album, a rushed collection titled Sounds of Silence. For their third album, the duo spent almost three months in the studio, for the first time extending a perfectionist nature both in terms of instrumentation and production.

The album largely consists of acoustic pieces that were mostly written during Paul Simon's period in England the previous year, including some recycled numbers from his debut solo record, The Paul Simon Songbook. The album includes the Garfunkel-led piece "For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her", as well as "7 O'Clock News/Silent Night", a combination of news reports of the day (the Vietnam War, the civil rights movement, the death of comedian Lenny Bruce), and the Christmas carol "Silent Night". – Wikipeadia

When I was a lad at school around 13 years old, our Maths teacher used to call me Wol. At the end of the year as we were moving up a class I plucked up courage to ask why he called me Wol. He told meit was thename of the deslexic owl in Winnie the Pooh. With my Harry Potter glasses he said I looked like the Wise Old Owl in the Winnie the Pooh stories.

Being the vain person I am I took it as a compliment
