Track Santa with NORAD

As well as watching Santa's sleigh fly over on a practice run, your kids can also track his progress on Christmas Eve.

Here's how they can check exactly where Father Christmas - and their presents! - are.

Your little ones probably have a billion questions for Father Christmas so why not let them…

And it's the perfect solution if your kids are already asking, 'when is Santa coming?'

The North American Aerospace Defense Command's (NORAD) Santa Tracker will help your little ones follow Father Christmas on his journey from the North Pole on Christmas Eve.

And this means they know exactly where he - and their presents - are!

Oooh ... the excitement! If you like to add those extra magic touches to Christmas, this is a really easy one. Honestly, it's all done for you. No cutting, sticking or drawing involved.

And it's the perfect solution if your kids are already asking, 'when is Santa coming?' The North American Aerospace Defense Command's (NORAD) Santa Tracker will help your little ones follow Father Christmas on his journey from the North Pole on Christmas Eve.

And this means they know exactly where he - and their presents - are!

What is the NORAD Santa Tracker? NORAD - which for the rest of the year focuses on defending US airspace - uses its entire North Warning System of 47 radar installations to check for signs of Santa Claus leaving the North Pole.

Once Santa has set off, satellites are then used to track his progress. Located 22,3000 miles above Earth, they have infrared sensors which means they can see the heat given off by Rudolph's red nose.

It's the 61st year NORAD and its predecessor, the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD), have tracked Santa’s flight.

The technology needs to be good - Santa flies at around 1,800 miles a second and needs to visit 390,000 homes a minute. Phew, no wonder he eats so many mince pies on Christmas Eve!

Santa begin his annual journey at 2 a.m. ET, and Google and NORAD have developed many different ways to keep tabs on the jolly old elf this season. One of the best ways to do so is through the Google Earth Web browser plug-in available for Windows and Mac OS X users.

On Windows, the plug-in works with Google Chrome, Internet Explorer 6 or higher, Firefox 2.0 or higher, and Flock. Mac users can use the plug-in with Safari and Firefox 3.0 or higher and some Chromium builds. Google Chrome for Mac does not currently support the Google Earth browser plug-in. You will not be able to track Santa this year using the Google Earth desktop client.

Once you've installed the plug-in, go to noradsanta.org to track Santa's progress using Google Earth in Google Maps. You can follow Santa's trail of presents, called his "Sparkles Trail," to see where Saint Nick has been. Clicking on any of the present icons will give you a user-generated image in a pop-up window courtesy of Google's Panoramio. From the window, you can take a look at more Panoramio images from that stop on Santa's tour, follow a link to learn more about that location on Wikipedia, or zoom in on Google Maps to take a closer look.

When I was a lad at school around 13 years old, our Maths teacher used to call me Wol. At the end of the year as we were moving up a class I plucked up courage to ask why he called me Wol. He told meit was thename of the deslexic owl in Winnie the Pooh. With my Harry Potter glasses he said I looked like the Wise Old Owl in the Winnie the Pooh stories.

Being the vain person I am I took it as a compliment
